What I love about bird photography is that it allows me to observe in such an intimate way. Through the lens I am so grateful to be able to witness the interactions and the personalities of individual birds; the uncompromising cycle of life in our natural world, as well as the breath-taking beauty of a movement that can only be c captured at 1/4000 of a second. It continually teaches me the fragility, the amazing capabilities and incredible specializations of individual species.

A Sword-billed Hummingbird sets up to drink in Ecuador. This species is designed to feed on longer tubular plants, and it can feed above or below other hummingbirds using the same flower, but in general the sword bill is slower to manipulate and puts this bird at a disadvantage when attempting to feed among other hummingbirds.
